Volcanoes from Space: Stunning Photos of Vesuvius & Etna by Astronaut Sophie Adenot (2026)

French astronaut Sophie Adenot has captured breathtaking aerial photographs of two of Europe's most iconic volcanoes, Mt Vesuvius and Mt Etna, during her 9-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Adenot's stunning images, taken with a Nikon Z9 and a Nikkor Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S telephoto lens, showcase the raw beauty of these volcanic formations. From her unique vantage point, she captured the dormant Vesuvius as a pimple-like formation and the active Etna with its snow-capped peak billowing smoke.

In an ESA statement, Adenot expressed her awe of the volcanic landscapes, stating, 'From orbit, volcanoes are some of the most beautiful natural sights.' She continued, 'Etna caught me by surprise one morning as I opened the shutters. The whiteness of its slopes... and that elegant plume of smoke which is a gentle reminder that it’s only lightly, very lightly, asleep.'

These images are a testament to Adenot's skill as a photographer and her unique perspective as an astronaut. Her first mission to space has been a productive one, with her capturing candid portraits of her teammates, NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, and cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev, as well as scenes of her native France.

Adenot's photographs offer a rare and captivating view of these iconic volcanoes, providing a unique perspective on the natural wonders of our planet. Her work highlights the beauty and power of nature, even from the vantage point of space.

As a writer and photographer, I find Adenot's images particularly fascinating. The contrast between the dormant and active volcanoes, and the sheer scale of the landscape, is truly remarkable. It raises a deeper question about the relationship between humanity and the natural world, and the potential impact of human activity on these fragile ecosystems.

In my opinion, Adenot's photographs are a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving and protecting our natural environment. They also serve as a reminder of the beauty and wonder that can be found in the most unexpected places, even in the vast expanse of space.
